Peer Review

How work is reviewed before it goes out.

Independent, confidential and constructive

Review exists to make work better and to keep standards consistent. This is how it works for the material we publish or prepare for publication.

  1. 1

    Initial check

The editorial office confirms the submission is complete, within scope and free of obvious ethics or originality concerns.

  2. 2

    Editor assigned

An editor with relevant subject knowledge takes responsibility for the review.

  3. 3

    Independent review

At least two reviewers who are independent of the authors read the work and give written comments.

  4. 4

    Decision

The editor weighs the comments and recommends acceptance, revision or rejection, with reasons.

  5. 5

    Revision

Authors respond to each comment point by point, and the revised work may be re-checked by the reviewers.

  6. 6

    Final check

Before release, the finished work is checked for formatting, citations and consistency with what was agreed.
